Challenging sex-ed status quo, KinkForAll brings culture hackers and peer-to-peer educators back to San Francisco

San Francisco, CA – April 9th, 2012 – The Noisebridge Hackerspace in San Francisco’s Mission district will host a free, all-ages, and open to the public unconference full of discussions about sexuality and its intersections with the rest of life. Empowering participants to share knowledge directly with neighbors and peers, organizers are encouraging everyone with an interest in challenging the status quo regarding sexuality information and its distribution to converge on Saturday, June 16th, 2012 for KinkForAll San Francisco 2. The event is the tenth conference of its kind nationally, and its second incarnation in the Bay Area.

“This is an opportunity for participants to explore ideas of self-empowerment, presentation tactics and community organizing, as well as an opportunity for cross-pollination with hacker, Maker and open source communities,” organizer Alisa said. The “unconference” format offers participants 20-minute slots in which to facilitate a discussion, give a presentation or lead a session on any topic related to sexuality. Interested individuals are already using websites and social media to brainstorm session ideas, such as: “Open Space Technology and Kink”, “The Cake Is Not a Lie; The Closet Is,” and “Custom Relationship Design.” Many KinkForAll sessions are recorded, and videos from previous events are available online for free.

“It’s like an interactive Wikipedia,” unconference founder Meitar Moscovitz said. “Imagine a world where everyone not only had free access to a library containing the sum total of sexuality information, but had a say in what information that library recorded. That’s why everyone from traditional sex educators to bloggers, and even chefs, circus troupes and street performers, photographers, new media journalists, and culture hackers of all stripes are welcome to participate.” Everyone attending is encouraged to participate in whatever form they find most inspiring or comfortable, including presenting, bringing food to share or livetweeting sessions using the #KFASF2 hashtag. Anyone interested can sign up and share ideas at http://wiki.kinkforall.org/KinkForAllSanFrancisco2 and can learn more at http://wiki.KinkForAll.org/KinkForAll.

Community unites through peer-based sex education, teach-ins at Tivoli Student Union

Denver, CO – February 2, 2012 – A full day conference featuring teach-ins, presentations, and discussions about sexuality and its intersection with the rest of life will be hosted on February 25 at the Tivoli Student Union. Organizers cite the peer-based education format as a key method to empowering individuals, helping participants learn on their own and share their knowledge with interested neighbors. The conference, called KinkForAll Denver, is a collaboration with a growing group of sexual freedom and education advocates spanning the nation.

“What excites me most about KinkForAll is the idea that everyone has valuable skills and ideas to share. We’re all experts on our own experiences,” said conference organizer Rebecca Crane. Past KinkForAll events featured sessions led by professionals and accredited sex educators, but also by students, amateur craft-makers, and even teens. Youth explained challenges in setting up Gay-Straight Alliances at schools, and other participants discussed topics ranging from gender identity to religion, personal coming out stories, writing about sex, sexuality and technology, and more. Many sessions are video recorded and made available online for free, helping to reform sex and relationships education with a grass-roots, citizen-driven movement. “Denver’s communities have a lot of unique knowledge to contribute to the growing national conversation about sexual freedom and relationship choice,” Crane said.

The innovative conference format gives each participant 20 minutes in which to facilitate a discussion, give a presentation, or lead a session on any topic related to sexuality. Everyone who attends is encouraged to present in whatever form they find most inspiring or comfortable. Anyone interested can learn more at http://wiki.KinkForAll.org/KinkForAll and sign up to participate at http://wiki.kinkforall.org/KinkForAllDenver.

Public, peer-to-peer sexuality education conference to be held at Brown University

Providence, RI – March 7th, 2011 – On March 19th, the eighth in a national series of free and open to the public conferences centered on the theme of sexuality and its intersection with other aspects of life will be taking place at Brown University, sponsored by the University’s Sexual Health Education & Empowerment Council (SHEEC). Called KinkForAll Providence 2, this is the second KinkForAll in Rhode Island, with previous ones having been held in cities ranging from New York City, Boston, and San Francisco. The conference aims to democratize the distribution of sexuality information and to empower individuals to learn on their own, sharing their knowledge with interested neighbors and peers.

“KinkForAll is a very unique and engaging conference series, so we strive to make the materials as broadly accessible as possible, posting conference material online so people who weren’t able to attend can still get the information. Furthermore, due to the user-generated structure and how the discussions are shaped by the attendees, participation is highly dynamic and exciting,” conference unorganizer and Chair of SHEEC, Aida Manduley, stated. Prior conferences have featured sessions on sexually transmitted infections, leather community leadership, body movement, youth sexuality, polyamory, technology, and more. Many of the sessions were video recorded and are available online for free.

The innovative conference format offers participants 20 minutes in which to facilitate a discussion, give a presentation, or lead a session on any topic related to sexuality. Everyone who attends is encouraged to present in whatever form they find most inspiring or comfortable. Anyone interested is welcome to indicate their participation by editing the web page at http://wiki.kinkforall.org/KinkForAll-Providence-2 and can learn more at http://wiki.KinkForAll.org/KinkForAll.

Peer-to-peer sexuality education movement spreads across America

San Francisco, CA — March 8, 2010 — Sexual freedom and health advocates are banding together to produce a free educational conference on March 21, 2010 about the intersection of sexuality with the rest of life. The all-ages, open to the public event, called KinkForAll San Francisco, invites anyone with a desire to learn or with something to contribute to participate. KinkForAll San Francisco will be hosted by the Women’s Building and is the first conference of its kind on the West coast of America.

KinkForAll San Francisco is the sixth in a series of grass-roots events that have propagated throughout New England, beginning in New York City one year ago today. Prior KinkForAll “unconferences,” in which participants are encouraged to share their knowledge with interested neighbors and peers, have featured sessions on sexually transmitted infections, technology, youth sexuality, photography, polyamory, student activism, gender theory, literature, and religion. In an effort to create shared knowledge with lasting benefit to humanity, many sessions are video recorded and made available online for free.

“The Women’s Building is a fantastic venue for KinkForAll San Francisco,” Meitar Moscovitz, the movement’s co-founder said. “As the first women-owned and operated community resource center in America, their mission of providing tools for women and girls to achieve equal participation in society echoes KinkForAll’s core values perfectly because we believe that education is a cornerstone to achieving that equality.” Many organizers of KinkForAll conferences support a citizen-driven reform of sexuality education, and aim to empower individuals to learn on their own.

The innovative conference format offers every participant 20 minutes in which to facilitate a discussion, give a presentation, or lead a session on any topic related to sexuality. Everyone who attends is encouraged to present in whatever form they find most inspiring or comfortable. Anyone interested is welcome to indicate their participation by editing the web page at http://wiki.kinkforall.org/KinkForAllSanFrancisco and can learn more at http://wiki.KinkForAll.org/KinkForAll.

Grass-roots public sexuality education conference to be hosted by Brown University

Providence, RI – January 31, 2010 – On February 6, Brown University will host a free and open to the public conference organized by a growing group of sexual freedom and education advocates spanning the nation. Called KinkForAll Providence, the conference’s theme is the intersection of sexuality with the rest of life. Its founders say their aim is to empower individuals to learn on their own and share their knowledge with interested neighbors and peers, helping to reform sexual education with a grass-roots, citizen-driven movement.

“KinkForAll is an amazing blend of traditional conference presentations and outreach using the Internet and social media, creating content that can be appreciated not just by attendees but by everyone, even if they can’t be physically present,” said conference organizer Emma Gross. Prior conferences have featured sessions on sexually transmitted infections, leather community leadership, body movement, youth sexuality, polyamory, technology, and more, many of which were video recorded and are available online for free. Aida Manduley, Chair of the Sexual Health Education and Empowerment Council, said, “everyone has a right to learn about and discuss matters relating to sexuality in all its different manifestations and intersections, and KinkForAll is a great environment for such conversations because it is so accessible and user-generated.” KinkForAll Providence will be the fifth conference of its kind. In its first year, the conference series has held events in New York City, Boston, and near Washington DC.

The innovative conference format gives every participant 20 minutes in which to facilitate a discussion, give a presentation, or lead a session on any topic related to sexuality. Innovative educational conference about sexuality to be held in Rockville, MD

Innovative educational conference about sexuality to be held in Rockville, MD

November 2, 2009 – The fourth in a series of not-for-profit educational sexuality conferences will be held on November 21st from 10 AM to 6 PM in the cafeteria of the Montgomery County Executive Office Building. The conference is free to attend and invites anyone present to speak. Organized by a leaderless group of sexual health and rights advocates spanning the nation, the conference aims to democratize the dissemination of sexuality information and to empower individuals to learn on their own and share their knowledge with interested neighbors and peers.

The innovative conference format gives participants 20 minutes each in which to facilitate a discussion, give a presentation, or lead a session on any topic related to sexuality. “These unconferences are great places for people to discuss sexuality and gender, and their many intersections with other parts of life,” said Nikolas Coukouma, event liaison. “The format permits many topics to be discussed and makes it easy for anyone to lead one on a topic that interests them.”

Information shared at prior events, called “KinkForAll unconferences,” has been made freely available online and has attracted thousands of viewers over several months. KinkForAll Washington DC comes after 3 successful KinkForAll unconferences in New York City and Boston, held in LGBT community centers and Universities. Participants at past events have discussed sexually transmitted infections, leather community leadership, body movement, gender and linguistic theory, polyamory, technology, food, and many other topics.

Although originally planned to be held at Bethesda Chevy-Chase High School, the conference has changed venues under legal and political pressure from the Montgomery County School Board. “We’re just thrilled to have a space designated for public use where people can share their knowledge, learn from each other freely, and build this community resource together,” Meitar Moscovitz, one of the event’s founders, said. “That’s important because we believe that free and safe access to accurate, non-judgmental information about human sexuality and sexual freedom—or about anything of public interest, for that matter—is a fundamental human right, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic class, educational level, or age.”

The loose and collaborative organizational style opens every aspect of the conference series’ activities, from email communications to financial transactions, to the public. “We don’t have any specific structure,” said Emma Gross, who’s part of a group working to put on a future unconference in Providence, RI. “We use the Internet and social media tools alongside more traditional communication mechanisms to self-organize before, during, and after the event itself. It’s very exciting, because it’s extremely open and accessible to everyone.” Anyone interested in being involved is welcome to indicate their participation by editing the web page at http://wiki.KinkForAll.org/KinkForAllWashingtonDC and can learn more at http://wiki.KinkForAll.org/KinkForAll.
